This Is My Story
I am a passionate lover of Jesus, who by His glorious grace, saved me, changed me, filled me with His abounding love and joy, and appointed me to help others find a thriving relationship with Jesus through the tool of music! If you’re a music lover who wants to break free from fear and grow in freedom and fullness in Christ, then you are in the right place.
More about me: I am the Director of Songwriter Development for The Worship Coalition, a nonprofit that trains leaders to use songwriting as a tool to build unity within churches, communities, and the greater body of Christ. I lead worship in the Phoenix area at my home church, Christ Church Gilbert, and at the Changing Lives Center in downtown Phoenix. I love my family! I’m so grateful to be married to my best friend, Scott, and for the gift of being a mom to our 3 college kids. We also have an adorable dog, Skye.
I once chased getting radio hits, but God gave me something far better: a powerful testimony of His grace. He took me from selfishly ambitious, confused, frustrated, and hurting (in my twenties) to soul-filling joy, peace and confidence in my relationship with Jesus and my calling as a songwriter. And I’m going to be honest with you—it’s taken me a long time to get here, and I’ve still got a long way to go! But all along the way, God has used songs as a tool to grow me in Christ and bear fruit in my life. I’m finally launching this website because I want to see you experience the blessing of using songs as a powerful tool to experience God and seal His sanctifying work in your heart!
The long version:
I am a fifth generation Christian. In 1905 in a tent revival meeting in Alexandria, Minnesota, my great-great grandpa received Jesus as his Savior. He was radically transformed from an abusive alcoholic into a Jesus-loving family man that the whole town saw changed before their eyes. I am one of over 300 of his descendents who are following Jesus, and music is a large part of our extended family’s passion and ministry. I grew up singing, singing, and more singing. Whether it was the old hymns at my grandma and grandpa’s church, worship choruses at my childhood church, Scripture songs as part of the kid’s choir for 7 different albums of Word Record’s G.T. and The Halo Express series, or the hundreds of other songs between church and school musicals and choirs, music filled my life and shaped me to love Jesus, love His Word, and love those around me. Although I studied the sciences in college, I still sang in a band and my university’s worship team and gospel choir. I spent a summer in Taiwan during college as a World Vision Youth Ambassador, which was a global choir of 50 college students from 50 different countries. It was another music-filled experience that God used to change me forever.
All throughout my growing up years, I was always humming a tune or writing little poems and it didn’t take long for those two things to collide in songwriting. At age 8, I wrote my first worship song. It was called “All of Me.” It was just a chorus, but I remember the feeling of awe that just a few minutes earlier this song didn’t exist, and now it existed! God had helped me create something out of nothing, and I was hooked! I started writing lyrics on napkins and humming and penning melodies every chance I got. By the time I was in high school, I was writing songs all the time for myself, my school choir, and special occasions. Although no one ever taught me songwriting, I had 10 years of piano lessons, and that was enough to give me the music theory I needed to write songs. In college that only increased as I was in a band that wrote all original music, and for the first time I was able to hear a few of my songs professionally recorded.
After college, I got married to the love of my life, got a “real” job, had kids, wanted to stay home with my kids, (so quit the corporate world and taught piano) served on the worship team at church, and filled notebooks with songs that only God heard. My music dreams were slipping away, and I had a lot of angst over it.
Then at age 32, I was convicted by a Bible teacher and the Holy Spirit that my songwriting gift was for building up the body of Christ (1 Cor. 4:7, Eph. 4:12), and that ignited a new responsibility in me to share the songs I was writing. I thought that stewarding my gift meant to keep knocking on Nashville doors, and when I finally got my “big break,” God asked me to walk away. I was devastated! But God didn’t let me stay there. He drew me closer to Him than I’d ever been and showed me that He let me experience some big let downs, so that He could let me down right into His loving arms.
God clarified my calling and gave me better dreams. I stopped chasing the world’s path to success, and started viewing music as what God created it to be: a powerful tool to grow closer to the Lord and seal His work in our hearts. In the process of surrendering, God has expanded my influence. I’ve been helping others find a thriving relationship with Jesus through leading worship, through the songs and books I write, and in coaching others in songwriting through The Worship Coalition.
Now I want to share this journey with you – showing you how to have transforming encounters with God through songs that seal His work in your heart and bear incredible fruit in your life for His glory! Are you ready to sing your way to freedom and fullness in Christ? Are you ready to get God’s Word so deep inside of you that you will never forget it? Are you ready to have a toolbox full of songs ready to help you win life’s daily battles? This is my prayer and confident expectation for you as we journey together into a thriving relationship with Jesus through music: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” – Romans 15:13 Get Started HERE.
